El TOTOCO Fútbolclub ha recibido 8 nuevos balones gracias al apoyo de los donantes dela Fundación TOTOCO. Los chicos hanrecibido la donación con gran alegría.

Además,el TOTOCO Fútbol Club cuenta ahora con la liga junior , TOTOCO Sub17 que maneja el mismo entrenador.

Segúnel entrenador del equipo, esta ayuda facilitará los entrenamientos y el nivel del equipo ya que estaban necesitando más balones y másnuevos.

El día 13 de octubre del2011 se realizo un encuentro en el Hotel Ecológico TOTOCO donde seconvoco a todos los miembros que integran el equipo de trabajo deFundación TOTOCO. Tenemos a gente trabajando en diferentes pueblos yalgunos no se conocian entre si.

El objetivo central de lareunión fue conocer a todas las personas que laboran con laFundación y conocer mas a cerca de esta organización. El encuentroduró aproximadamente 2 horas, se realizaron varias actividades yexposiciones donde cada uno de los presente hablaba sobre su trabajoen la Fundación y compartimos unas deliciosas tapas del Eco Lodge!

Según las opiniones de lostrabajadores, el encuentro fue una idea excelente ya que asi pudieronconocerse todos y compartir ideas

The 13^th ofOctober 2011, TOTOCO Foundation meet all of its members at the TOTOCOEco Lodge. We have people working in different towns and some of themdidn't know the rest of the group.

The central objective was toknow each member and collaborator and to know more about theFoundation, its history, philosophy and goals. Each of them explainedthe work that are involved at the Foundation and we share opinionsand good tapanades from the Hotel!

According to the TOTOCOFoundation Team, it was an excellent idea so they could know theirpartners and share some ideas from work.

Una noche para los niños „Donde viven los monstros“

El miércoles 28de septiembre Steffi (voluntaria de Totoco) organizo una noche de películaspara los niños de primaria. Anteriormente leyeron el libro en la escuela parapracticar lenguaje y estimular su imaginación. Con un proyector prestado montamos todo en lacasa comunal donde más o menos 60 niños y padres llegaron para ver “Donde vivenlos monstruos”.

Wednesday28 of September Steffi (volunteer of Totoco) organized a film night for thechildren of the primary school. Before that the kids read the book in school topractice their reading skill and to stimulate their imagination. We were ableto borrow a projector which we set up in the communal centre where more or less60 kids and parents arrived to see „Where the monsters live“.

Julio Cesar Menocaltiene 43 años y es vecino de la comunidad de Balgüe, también uno de los muchosagricultores que trabajan en su campo propio de arroz, frijol y plátano. El estácasado de segundas y tiene 2 hijos que estána su cargo. Hace 6 anos Julio tenía la idea de vender queso y con ese negocioel recibió una gran ayuda económica para su familia, en lugares como educación,alimentación, vestuario y de salud. El necesita invertir en su cultivo que cadaaño se lleva a cabo y así al final entra muy poco o en muchas ocasiones nada de ganancia para usar en la compra delqueso. Entonces esta vez Julio encontré una solución de buscar un micro créditode Fundación Totoco para que él pueda continuar con su negocio sin minimizarlas ventas. Hasta ahora Julio es el único que vende queso en el Volcán Madera ytiene sus clientes fijos como hoteles aquien vende su queso. Con su experiencia y su lógica el negocio va crecer bien, porque hay más y másgente interesada en su servicio.

Micro Loan – Selling cheese

Julio CesarMenocal is 43 years old and a citizen of Balgüe he is also one of the many farmerswho work on their fields of rice, beans and banana plantations. He lives withhis second wife with whom he had two children he cares for to this day. Juliohad the idea of selling cheese 6 years ago and with this business he found thathe could finally support his family properly in thinks like education, food, clothand with health issues. The problem hewas facing though was that every year he had to invest to cultivate his groundsso that by the end very little or most times nothing would be left for him touse to buy cheese in the coming year. This time he came up with the idea of asking for a microloan, so that hecan continue with his business without compromising his selling’s. Until now Juliois the only one who is selling cheese in the neighborhood of Vulcan Maderas andhas his fixed clients like hotels, to whom he is selling his product. With his experience,logic and will his business surly is going to be more than ok as there is moreand more demand for his service.

CONTINÚA CONSTRUCCIÓN DE LABORATORIO CLINICO EN BALGUE

Uno de los más importantes proyectos de la Fundación en las áreas de salud es la construcción que se está llevando a cabo en la comunidad de Balgue donde mas de 10 comunidades serán beneficiadas con tan importante labor social

La alcaldía de Altagracia se encuentra al tanto de este proyecto y hemos recibido láminas de zinc para el techo del laboratorio, la construcción estará terminada dentro de unos 15 días como máximo, contamos también con el apoyo de los pobladores quienes continúan participando en la construcción.

FOLLOWING UP THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE MEDICAL LABORATORY IN BALGÜE

One of the most important projects of the Foundation in the health area is the construction of the Medical Lab which is being built in Balgüe right now where more than 10 neighboring communities are going to benefit of such an important social labor.

The Mayor of Altagracia is aware of this project and is helping by sponsoring the laminate of Zinc for the roof and the tiles for the floor of the lab. The Laboratory will be finished within the next 15 days maximum and with the support of the locals who keep on helping out with the construction of the building.

CENTRO DE SALUD RECIBE DONACION DE MEDICAMENTOS

Fundación TOTOCO en su ardua labor de mejorar la salud de los pobladores de la comunidad de Balgue, Isla de Ometepe una vez mas consigue ayuda para el centro de salud de esta comunidad

Ana y Joaquín de nacionalidad Española visitan la Isla para poder brindar su apoyo social esta vez han donado a la Fundación una variedad de Medicamentos útiles para la sociedad. En esta ocasión fueron beneficiados los pobladores de la comunidad de Balgue del municipio de Altagracia

Los medicamentos llegaron a Ometepe custodiados por sus mismos donantes el día 15 de Agosto del año 2011 y fueron entregados al centro de salud de la comunidad el día 16 de Agosto del 2011 las enfermaras que la laboran en el centro de salud Jenny Díaz y Thelma Díaz mostraron un constante agradecimiento y satisfacción por la voluntariosa labor de Ana y Joaquín

The health center recieved a donation of medicine

With their strenuous work for a better healthcare system for the community of Balgüe and the island of Ometepe once more the Foundation TOTOCO managed to find help for the health centre of Balgüe.

Ana and Joaquin from Spain visited the island to provide their social support by helping out in the projects of the foundation and by donating a variety of medicine donated by Pharmacies from Spain for the population of the island. This time the residents of Balgüe and the neighborhood of Altagracia where the once to benefit from the donation.

The medicine arrived to Ometepe guarded by their two donors the 15th of august 2011 and got brought to the health centre of the community the next day where the nurses Jenny Diaz and Thelma Diaz showed their appreciation and acknowledgment for the voluntary work from Ana and Juaquin.

Una de nuestros voluntarios comenzó a dar clases a los niños de primaria. Steffi trabajo con niños anteriormente en jardines de infancia y como nanny por eso quería ayudar especialmente en ese proyecto. En las clases Steffi esta ensenando los niños con juegos verbales, visuales y prácticos como” Veo Veo “ , “EL hombre colgante” y ver películas para aprender y entender el mundo entero. Tocamos más de todos los aspectos que no se ensenan en la escuela como geografía, arte, gramática ingles pero también actividades importantes como leer y escribir. Las clases son en progres los martes por la mañana y viernes en por la tarde en Mano Amiga.

One of our volunteers started to give classes to the primary school children. Steffi worked with Kids before in “Kindergarden” and as a nanny so that she was especially interested to help in this project. In the classes Steffi is teaching the children with verbal, visual and practical games like “ I spy with my little eye” , “ The hanging man” and films to learn and understand the wider world altogether. The subjects she is covering the most are the once who don´t get taught in school like geography, arte, grammar and English but also themes like reading and writing. The classes are in progress Tuesday mornings and Friday afternoons in Mano Amiga.

Microloan - Venta de Comida Rapida/ Selling Fast Food

Diega Flores es vecina de Balgüe y con su 35 anos esta en el proceso de abrir un pequeno restaurante de comida rapida nicaraguense con la ayuda de microcredito. Diega mantiene a su marido y sus tres hijos con el trabajo de cocinera en el Hotel Ecologico Totoco. Ella esta muy feliz con su trabajo en el Eco Hotel Totoco, pero lo que necesita es un mayor ingreso y un empleo para su hija Marjury que es la mayor de 19 anos que al llegar a su independencia, quiere montar su propio negocio. En la foto ustedes pueden ver el proceso de construction del restaurante, que va a terminar entre 15 a 30 dias. Marjury se hara cargo del restaurante y Diega a cocinar cosas rapida nicaraguense como carnes fritas, sandwiches y tostones.

Diega Flores is from Balgüe and with her 35 years she is in the process of opening a little Nicaraguan fast food restaurant with help from the microcredit’s. Diega cares for her husband and her three children, working as a chef for the Ecolodge Hotel Totoco. She is very happy with her job, but what she needs is a bigger income and a job for her daughter Marjury, who is the oldest of the three and would like to reach independence by opening her own business. In this Photo you can see the construction process of the restaurant which is going to be finished within the next 15 to 30 days. Marjury will be put in charge of the restaurant and Diega to cook thinks from the area like fried meat, sandwiches and tostones.

TOTOCO Futbol Club -- Liga Sub17

A mediados del mes de mayo del 2011 da inicio en la municipalidad de Altagracia el torneo de futbol Sub 17, el juego más gustado por la mayoría de la juventud.

La selección TOTOCO Futbol Club senior han estado muy contentos por el apoyo que les hemos brindados. Esta liga demostraron ser uno de los mejores equipos de futbol del municipio de Altagracia al ganar el segundo lugar. Su técnico Anibal Zambrana con todo su esfuerzo continúa preparandolos para llegar a ser los mejores.

Ahora Anibal se esta encargando de entrenar a los jovenes que estan participando en la nueva liga Sub 17 2011 y nosotros como organización social estamos pendiente de las necesidades del equipo y gracias a las donaciones recibidas hemos conseguido para este ano dar nuestro apoyo a la compra del equipamiento necesario; como camisetas, pantalones, calzetas, tacos,....

Mid-May of 2011 marked the beginning of the under 17 soccer league in the municipality of Altagracia, and is a favorite sport activity for most of the young people.

The TOTOCO soccer club senior league has been very happy with the help that we have brought them. This league has demonstrated that they are one of the best soccer teams in the Altagracia municipality by winning second place. Their coach Anibal Zambrana continues preparing them to become the best.

Right now Anibal is in charge of training the young group who are participating in the new under 17 league in 2011 and we, as a social organization, are trying to fulfill the needs of the team. Thanks to the donations we have received we have given our support for the purchase of some necessary equipment like jerseys, shorts, shin guards and cleats.

Charlas la Boletina

En la ultima charlas "La Boletina," discusión de la salud de mujeres los miércoles, asistio un grupo de 13 mujeres. Mostramos uno de los videos de una serie "como cuidar a sus hijos." El video fue sobre mantener sano a su bebé, desde el embarazo hasta el primer año. Se enseñó acerca de la nutrición materna, la lactancia materna, la transición a los alimentos sólidos, el crecimiento dental, y consejos generales sobre la nutrición infantil para mantener sano a su bebé en todas las etapas de crecimiento. Todos los asistentes, excepto una niña, fueron madres, muchas con niños muy jovenes. Le hicimos algunas preguntas a las mujeres y encontramos que algunas de ellas tuvieron su primer hijo tan jóvenes como a los 13 y 15 años de edad. Dijeron que la generación actual de mujeres jóvenes está más informada sobre los métodos anticonceptivos y que no se tienen hijos a una edad tan joven. La discusión fue bien y algunas de las mujeres dijeron que querian venir la próxima semana para ver otro video. A pesar de que hemos puesto carteles en torno a Balgüe para anunciar las "Charlas," las enfermeras del centro de salud son las que traen a la mayoría de la gente.
Tuvimos la asistencia de Sue Ellen, la coordinadora de la fundacion TALICA, que colabora con este proyecto.

In the last session of "charlas la Boletina," women's health discussion on Wednesdays, we had 13 women in attendance. We showed one of the videos from a series about "how to care for your child." The video was about keeping your baby healthy, from pregnancy through the first year. It taught about maternal nutrition, breast feeding, transitions to solid foods, teething, and general infant nutrition tips to keep your baby healthy at all stages of growth. All but one girl in attendance were mothers, many of them with very young children. We asked a few questions to the women and found that a few of them had their first child as young as 13-15 years old. They said that the current generation of young women are more informed about contraception and so they are not having babies at such a young age. The discussion went well and some of the women said they would come next week to see another video. Even though we have been putting posters up around Balgue to advertise the "Charlas," the nurses at the health center seem to bring in the most people.
We also had Sue Ellen at our meeting, the coordinator of TALICA Foundation, which collaborates with us on this project.

Clases de Inglés para Niños - English Classes for Children

Algunos de nuestros voluntarios han decidido a dar clases de inglés para niños una vez a semana. Los clases son los jueves por la tarde en Mano Amiga. Kelsi y Emily han tomado clases universitarios sobre cómo enseñar inglés a extranjeros, y Kirsten es fluente en hablar el español. Juntas, ellas tienen bastante experiencia para dar los clases. Los ninos van a aprender saludos, sentimientos, amínales, colores, como presentar su misma, y otras cosas simples, y también juegos y actividades que usan el vocabulario nuevo

A few of our volunteers have decided to give english clases for children once a week. The classes are held on Thursday afternoons at the Mano Amiga Library. Kelsi and Emily have taken university classes on how to teach English to foreigners, and Kirsten is fluent in Spanish. Together, they have enough experience to teach the classes. The children will learn greetings, feelings, animals, colors, how to present themselves, and other simple things, and they will also do games and activities that use their new vocabulary words.

Jenny Diaz Castillo es una de las enfermeras en el centro de salud en Balgue. Ella vive en Balgue cerca el centro de salud con su esposo, uno de sus 3 hijos y su nieto. Ella tiene un salario fijo pero el ingreso de su esposo es poco y inconstante. Una de sus hijas estaba vendiendo productos cosméticos desde Zermat y Vogue por algunos años pero se fue a Costa Rica desde algunos meses. Este negocio puede ser un buen ingreso suplementa, y porque gente de la isla demandan los productos, Jenny decidió en tomar las riendas. Ella nos preguntó por un micro financia para que puede comprar los cosméticos para empezar.

Jenny Diaz Castillo is one of the nurses at the Balgue health center. She lives in Balgue near the health center with her husband, one of her three children, and her grandson. She has a stable income but her husband’s income is low around unstable. One of her daughters was selling cosmetic products through Zermat and Vogue for a couple of years but left for Costa Rica a few months ago. This business is a good source of supplemental income, and since people from the island are still interested in buying the products, Jenny decided to take over the business. She asked us for an initial loan so she could buy the cosmetics to get started.

Socorro Menocal es una de nuestras beneficiarios de las micro financias. Ella es madre de 4 hijos, 3 que quedan a su cargo, y su pareja trabaja como profesor en la escuela primaria. Uno de sus hijos ha empezado escuela fuera de la isla para ser enfermera. Socorro quiere independencia financia y habría pensado en diferentes opciones para establecer un negocio pequeño. Ella realizó que, durante toda la vida, ha vendido comida puerto a puerto, pero no pude hacerlo como trabajo permanente porque la fuente de dinero disponible a ella fue irregular cada mes.

Socorro escribió una prepuesta para un micro financia para ofrecer comida consistentemente. Ella ofrece arroz de leche, atol (arena de maíz con leche), y algunos postres. Su motivación viene del deseo de ser independiente financia, contribuir a la economía de la familia, ayudar su hija con estudios de universidad, y ser empleado por su misma. Balgue empiece a tener un mercado semanal y Socorro, junta con otras mujeres del pueblo, quiere vender sus postres en el mercado cada sábado.

Socorro Menocal is one of our microloan beneficiaries. She is a mother of 4 children, 3 of them still under her care, and her husband is a primary school teacher. One of her children has started this year nursing school outside the island. Socorro would like to be financially independent and has been thinking in different options to establish a small business. She realized that, during all of her life, she has been selling food door by door, but she couldn't do it as a her permanent business due to the irregular amount of money available for her each month.

She wrote a microloan proposal for a monthly allowance that would give her a consistent supply of food to sell. She offers rice pudding, atol (corn flour with milk), and various desserts. Her main motivation is her desire to be financially independent, to contribute to the family income, help her daughter with her university studies and be self-employed. Balgue is beginning to hold a weekly flea market and Socorro, together with other women from town, wants to sell her desserts every Saturday at the market.

Eliminamos las Barreras en Educación

El programa Paso por Paso inició este año con un buen porcentaje de estudiantes decididos a mejorar su rendimiento académico, sin embargo no fue posible ubicar a los estudiantes de repaso de matemáticas de secundaria en el mismo local donde recibieron sus clases el año anterior debido a que para estos días hay muchas actividades de recreación e interrumpe la concentración de los jóvenes .Por esto que hemos buscado dentro de la comunidad un nuevo local para que ellos reciban sus clases,La Casa Comunal. Una de las limitaciones era que no teníamos mesas ni sillas para los estudiantes, es por eso que hemos construido dos mesas con sus bancos para acondicionar el local de los jóvenes y ellos se sientan mas entusiasmado y contentos.

Removing Barriers to Education

The Paso por Paso program started this year with a good percentage of students who decided participate and better their academic performance, but it was not possible to keep the students from high school remedial math class in the same location they had class last year because there are many recreational activities that interrupt their concentration. Because of this we have moved their classes to a new location in the community, La Casa Comunal, the town’s central meeting place. One of the limitations was that we didn’t have tables or chairs for the students, so we constructed tables with benches to make sure the students feel more enthusiastic and happy with the new location.

En este año hemos iniciado las clases de Repaso el día 7 de Marzo del año 2011, los alumnos muestran mucho entusiasmo ya que el año anterior salieron beneficiados mejorando su rendimiento académico, y para este año hemos presenciado un incremento significativo del numero de estudiantes que asisten a las clases.

Argentina es la profesora que imparte las clases de repaso a los estudiantes de secundaria de la comunidad de Balgue. Es licenciada en ciencias fisicas. Es muy profesional y los estudiantes estan muy contentos con ella. 68 estudiantes estan asistiendo al programa. Actualmente las classes son en el instituto por la manana y por la tarde-noche en el centro Mano Amiga.

Gracias a la cooperación de nuestros donantes hemos logrado expandir el programa Paso por Paso a nuevos lugares del Volcán Maderas como Madronal y Santa Cruz.

Estela Jiménez ensena español y matematicas en la escuela de primaria de Madronal a los estudiantes con mayores dificultades de aprendizaje. Desde que el programa ha comenzado los niños ha asistido diariamente a las clases, y los padres estan comprometidos a enviar a los ninos al prgrama de las clases de repaso PXP. 25 estudiantes estan asistiendo al programa. Las clases se imparten de lunes a viernes en horarios que no afectan las clases obligatorias estatales.

Emerson es Licenciado en Ingles graduado en la UNAN Managua, Nicaragua, y ahora trabaja como profesor de ingles en el programa PXP. Imparte sus clases en Santa Cruz de la Isla de Ometepe.El entusiasmo de los jóvenes y el interés han hecho que las clases sean muy exitosas y que atiendas siempre muchos alumnos, cerca del maximo permitido de 10 alumnos por grupo.

Paso por Paso has started the 7^th of March 2011. Students are very enthusiastic due to the good results they had last year thanks to the remedial classes program, which has increased the number of participating students.

Rosa Argentina is the secondary school teacher of the community of Balgue. She is has a degree in Physical sciences from UNAN, the public university in Managua. She is very professional and the students are very happy with her. 68 students are attending the classes. Nowadays classes are running during the morning at the secondary school and during the evenings at the Mano Amiga center.

Thanks to cooperation with our donors we have achieved to expand the PXP program to other communities on the Maderas Volcano in Madronal and Santa Cruz.

Estela Jimenez is teaching Spanish and mathematics at the primary school in Madronal to students that have difficulties understanding course material. Since the begining, students are attending classes everyday and parents are committed to sending them to the remedial classes program PXP. 25 students are attending the classes. Classes are from Monday to Friday in a variable schedule set by the obligatory Governmental program.

Emerson has a degree in English from the public University in Managua, UNAN. He teaches English in Santa Cruz to the secondary school students as part of the PXP program. Classes run on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The classes are very succesful due to the enthusiasm and interest of the students and enrollment is near to the maximum number of ten students allowed per group.

PXP Educational final year report

Primary school.

Francisco Alberto Castillo is the remedial classes teacher for the primary school in Balgue. He graduated in 2004 and worked as a substitute teacher at the primary school. Primary school teachers work with our students with learning difficulties and also the scholar program. Francisco has a very close relation with his students. He teaches Spanish and Mathematics and together with us, teachers and parents,we hold monthly meetings to follow up the program.

Primary school remedial classes are taught in Mano Amiga library and in the primary school.

There are 6 primary school grades and students are from 6 to 12 years old. Students attend 5 hours of class a day plus one remedial class form PXP program. Groups are stable plus or minus one or two students.

Year results:

199 primary school students- 3 failed. 48 PXP students- 1 PXP student failed. She is a girl with family and mental problems.

23 first year students in total, 7 PXP students. 2 students failed, 1 of them attended the PXP program.

34 second year students. 6 PXP students. All passed.

38 third year students. 8PXP students. 1 failed. She didn't attended PXP program.

29 forth year students. 7PXP students. All passed.

30 fifth year students. 10 PXP students. All passed.

45 sixth year students. 10 PXP students. All passed.

El grupo de mujeres “ La Boletina” se reunio el pasado miercoles, 5 de enero en el centro de salud de Balgue. Junto con Lauri, medico de familia y voluntaria de la Fundacion, leimos un articulo donde el tema principal era la igualdad de derechos entre hombres y mujeres. Contamos con la participacion de 8 mujeres nicaraguenses y dos norteamericanas. Diana nos leyo un poema que ella escribio y la Fundacion regalo a cada participante un poema de la famosa escritora nicaraguense Gioconda Belli que comienza asi: “Amanece con pelo largo el dia curvo de las mujeres...” Flores para todas las mujeres. Nos reuniremos cada miercoles para leer “La Boletina” y compartir opiniones.

The women's group “ La Boletina” had a meeting December 5^th at the health center in Balgue. Together with Lauri, family doctor and volunteers from the Foundation, we read an article and held a discussion about civil rights equality for men and women. Our meeting had 8 Nicaraguan women and 2 from North America. Diana wrote a poem and read it aloud to the group and the Foundation presented a poem by Gioconda Belli that began with quote: "Amanece con pelo largo el dia curvo de las mujeres..." Flowers for every woman. We will have a meeting everyWednesday to read “La Boletina,” a womens' periodical, and have constructive discussion.

El 23 de Diciembre hicimos una convocatoria de “ninos artistas” en el pueblo. Recogimos a 35 participantes en “ la bestia” la pick up del Hotel TOTOCO. Kilometro y medio lleno de alegria y risas. Decoramos con sus dibujos navidenos el restaurante del hotel. Despues nos divertimos bailando la pinata y los regresamos de vuelta a su casa. El recorrido fue muy divertido, danto trompicones de aca para alla, tocando el claxon y gritando por todo el pueblo “ Feliz Navidad, HOHOHO”

Last December 23^th, we did a call for “artistic children” in town. We picked up 35 participants and bring them up to the hotel on “the beast” the TOTOCO pick up truck. A kilomiter and a half full of joy and laugh. We decorated the hotel with their Chistmas drawings. After that we had fun playing with “la pinata” (a case full of sweets hung with a rope from the roof that children hit with a stick until it breaks and they take all the sweets they can) and we came back to town. The drive was fun, bouncing up and down in the truck, honking the truck's horn and shounting “Feliz Navidad, HOHOHO” for all the town.

El proyecto de las clases de informatica ha empezado! El instituto de Balgue Jaime Marza recibio 28 computadoras. The computer project has started! High School Jaime Marza in Balgue received 28 computers. Our work was, together with teachers, director and family parent's committee, to find a teacher and start formal computer classes. They have already started last Monday! Students from the last years, the fourth and fifth grade, are having beginners computer classes so next year they can face the university with some computer knowledge.

HEALTH. The healthy Women Project. Some months ago, we bought books related to overall health and medicine books for people and nurses. They are available at the Balgue's health center. We are also building a cabinet for their better conservation and safety. Everybody can see books though the glass doors and consult them.

El pasado viernes 24 de septiembre presentamos un taller de elaboracion de ramos de flores en el proyecto Mano Amiga. Alex, voluntaria de la finca ecologica TOTOCO es una florista especializada y nos enseno a realizar ramos de flores para adornar mesitas de noche, para mesas de centro y para rinconeras. Los asistentes estuvieron muy entusiasmados con el taller y aplaudieron a la docente. La biblioteca estuvo adornada una semana con nuestros ramos!

Last Friday the 24^th of September we presented a bouquet of flower workshop at Mano Amiga project. Alex, volunteer from TOTOCO's farm is a especial florist and she show us how to prepare bouquets of flowers for night tables, coffee tables and corner tables. Attendees were very enthusiastic and clapped the teacher. Library was adorned with our bouquets for a week!

Rosario Paisano, a prestigious health technical from Ometepe, delighted last Friday the 4th grade secondary school students. After their school lessons and during an hour and a half, Rosario talked about self steam and played a game with students to reinforce their self steam. Students cooperate and enjoy the activity. This workshop is espected to take place twice a week in the Balgue high school, Jaime Marza.

Una pareja de jovenes pescadores de Balgue obtienen un micro credito del Centro de Desarrollo TOTOCO!

Cristian y Gerald son vecinos y viven en Balgue al lado del lago. Cristian crecio pescando con su padre y sabe todo sobre peces y su amigo Gerald le acompana en la actividade desde el ano pasado. Cosntruyeron un pequeno bote y necesitaban ayuda financiera para comprar el resto de materiales. Una red de pesca concreta, un termo y diferentes tipos de cuerdas ha sido suficiente para mejorar considerablemente su negocio. Pescan tres tipos de pescado: Guapote, tilapia y mojarra y abastecen a Balgue y a otras comunidades del interior de la isla. Ellos les dicen "Muchas gracias por su ayuda!"

A young couple of fishermen get a micro loan from TOTOCO Development Center!

Cristian and Gerald are neighbors and live in Balgue beside the lake. Cristian has grown up fishing with his father and knows everything about fish and his friend Gerald has been fishing for the past year. They built a little boat and needed financial help to buy missing equipment. A specific net, a cooler, and different kind of rope have being enough to improve considerably their business. They fish three kind of fishes: Guapote, tilapia and mojarra and supply Balgue and other towns from inland. They say "Muchas gracias por su ayuda!" ("Thank you so much for your help!")

An objective for primary school teachers is that their students get to know important places at their community and surrounding areas and the Mano Amiga library, where we run education activities and were we have the library is considered one of this important places! Marina, the kinder garden teacher came with 10 of her students and we saw them our treasure: over a thousand book library classify in areas as history, geography, art, biology, poetry, psychology, adult novels, teenagers novels, children books, English books, dictionaries and encyclopedias.
We played with “Sesame Street” Encyclopedia and children express their art painting in paper.
They promise to come back, next time with their parents!

Un objetivo de los profesores de primaria es que sus estudantes conozcan los lugares importantes en su comunidad y alrededores, y la libreria del proyecto Mano Amiga, donde donde llevamos a cabo los proyectos de educaciony donde esta la libreria esta considerado como uno de esos lugares importantes! Marina, la profesora de la guarderia vino con 10 de sus estudiantes y les mostramos nuestro tesoro: mas de mil libros clasificados en areas como historia, geografia, arte, biologia, poesia, psicologia, novelas para adultos, novelas para adolescentes, libros de ninos, libros en ingles, diccionarios y enciclopedias.

We started a new project!

Education

On The Right Way.( OTRW) University Students Transport program.

Most university students in Balgue, a total of 18, work during the week and study off island during the weekend. They use public transport to arrive to the harbour but bus service doesn't arrive until town on their way back.

TOTOCO Development Center provides them a espresso an free transport service, round trip, every Saturday. This save them 2 hours transport time and 2 and a half walking hours back home at night, besides the 2 dollars transport ticket.

Students in return will volunteer in the Development Center and help the coordinator, Patricia Pillet, with some activities as library opening hours on Sundays, update the book catalog, accounting classes to microloan beneficiaries and guide the Cultural Tour to town.

En el camino correcto. (OTRW) Programa de transporte para estudiantes universitarios.

La mayoria de los estudantes universitarios en Balgue, un total de 18, trabajan durante la semana y estudian fuera de la isla el fin de semana. Usan el transporte publico para llegar al puerto pero ese servicio no les lleva hasta su pueblo a la vuelta.

El Centro de Desarrollo TOTOCO les provee un servicio de transporte espreso y gratis de ida y vuelta cada Sabado. Esto les ahorra 2 horas de transporte y 2 horas y media de caminos de vuelta a casa por la noche, ademas de los 2 dolares del boleto de transporte.

Los estudiantes, a cambio, trabajaran como voluntarios en el Centro de Desarrollo ayudando a la coordinadora, Patricia Pillet, con algunas actividades como apertura de la bilbioteca los domingos, actualizacion del catalogo de libros, clases de contabilidad a los beneficiarios de los microcreditos y guiar a los turistas del hotel en el Tour Cultural al pueblo.

Sue Ellen Wortzel TALICA's director, Jenny Diaz, the Balgue's nurse, Roberto Mairena, Mano Amiga's committee and Patricia Pillet TOTOCO DC Director, went last Friday 18th of June to Managua to get book and material for the health center and for the Mano Amiga library.

We got a otoscope, tensiometer, stethoscope, and a minor surgery kid! We bought them in the documentation center of sexual and reproductive health in Managua's University for a lower price. We also got 3 other books for free and a family planning display and we bought a couple of books. We also visited Hispamer library and got another book for HWP and 5 other for the education program Window to the World (WTW)

We also picked up in Rivas the quarterly magazine "La Boletina" and we will deliver the 50 magazines in Maderas's Volcano - (Mano Amiga library, health center, secondary school and to our teenagers interested in our workshops about sexual and reproductive health).

Teenagers workshops are re-started with a big attendance! This time we talked about sexual transmission diseases.
- We started with the "professional workshops" with Tessa Heine, bachelor of occupational therapy in La Trobe University, Australia Australia). Tessa consultations are on Wednesdays since last 16th of June.

Lo compramos en el centro de documentacion de salud sexual y reproductiva de la Universidad de Managua a precio mas economico. Ademas nos regalaron 3 libros y un expositor sobre planificacion familiar y compramos un par de libros. Tambien visitamos la libreria Hispamer y compramos otro manual para HWP y otros 5 para el programa de educacion Window to the World (WTW) (Ventana al mundo)

Recogimos en Rivas la revista trimestral "La Boletina" y repartiremos los 50 ejemplares en el Volcan Maderas - (Biblioteca Mano Amiga,centros de salud, institutos de secundaria y adolescentes asistentes a los talleres de salud sexual y reproductiva)

Iniciamos de nuevo los "talleres con adolescentes" y celebramos la alta asistencia. Esta vez hablamos de las enfermedades de transmision sexual (ITS)
- Iniciamos con los "talleres profesionales" con la terapista ocupacional Tessa Heine licenciada en la universidad australiana La Trobe. Tessa pasa consulta cada miercoles desde el 16 de junio de 2010.

Marina, the primary school kinder garden teacher promote what she called "important places in our community”. Mano Amiga's library was on her list and I received them last Thursday 17^th of June.

I explain children what activities we do in the center. We used “Sesame Street” collection and after they made some drawing. They behave very well and loved the place. I invited them and their parent to come back!

The shareholders and donors where very happy with the achievements and donated a total of 5,000 dollars for the DC at once to expand the running projects and to start new initiatives!

Tour Cultural del Centro de Desarrollo TOTOCO.

El Centro de Desarrollo ofrece un tour cultural a los clientes del Hotel Ecologico TOTOCO. Es un tour guiado por la coordinadora del Centro de Desarrollo. Paseando por los caminos llegamos al pueblo, a traves de bosques frondosos, visitando las ruinas de la antigua hacienda de los Chamorro “Finca La Palmera”, el cementerio de Balgue, la libreria del pueblo ”Projecto Mano Amiga” donde se realizan las clases de repaso del proyecto PXP y el programa de Clases Culturales. Una vez en el pueblo, los clientes visitan los lugares donde se estan desarrollando los microcreditos concedidos y tambien se visitan artesanos locales. Collares, pulseras, cestas tejidas, jicaros tallados y pan de chocolate y de platano son algunos de los productos que trabajan.
El tour les ofrece la oportunidad de visitar a la gente local en sus propias casas y conocer de cerca los proyectos que el Centro de Desarrollo tiene en funcionamiento.

TOTOCO Development Center Cultural Tour.

The Development Center offers a cultural tour to TOTOCO Eco Lodge guests. This tour is conducted by the DC's Coordinator. Walking over country trails you arrive in town while passing through lust forest, seeing the reamins of the old Chamorro hacienda, “Finca La Palmera”, the Balgue's cementery, the town's library “project Mano Amiga”, where TTC's DC Educational Project PXP and the Cultural Classes Program are carried out. Once in town guests see where the TTC's DC micro loans are working and also visit local craftmen. Collars, brazalets made with seeds, woven baskets, curving jicaros, honey and banana and chocolate bread are some of the products they work on. This tour give guest a chance to visit local people in their own homes and know off closer the running the Development Center projects.

Futbol Club TOTOCO

El equipo de futbol TOTOCO lo forman 18 jugadores entre 16 y 23 anos y tres entrenadores locales. El proyeto comenzo en enero y ya han jugado 6 veces en la liga del volcan Maderas. Ganaron 3, empataron 2 y perdieron 1. En la liga participan 7 equipos de todo el volcan. Tres finalistas competiran con el volan concepcion.

Los entrenamientos son los martes, jueves , viernes y domingos a las 8 de la manana.

A cambio, los jugadores de futbol colaboran en labores sociales. Han limpiado de plasticos una zona muy afectada del rio y tambien hacen la limpieza del campo de futbol.

The TOTOCO football team is formed by 18 football players amongs 16 and 23 years old and 3 volunteer trainers. The project started in January and they already have played 6 times in the volcano Madera's league. They won 3, draw 2 and lost 1. There are 7 football team participating in the league in all Maderas volcano. The 3 finalist would compite against Concepcion volcano.

Training days are Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays at 8 am.

In exchange, the football team players colaborate in social actions. They cleaned from plastics an afected area in the river and also make the cleaning of the towns football field.

Al dia siguiente de entregarles el prestamo, tome el bus de las 5 de la manana hacia Moyogalpa y alli me encontre a Wilmara, Alvino y a Herty. Iban a salir de la isla para hacer comprar la mercancia necesarias para iniciar su negocio. Me puse tan contenta de ver las ganas que tenian de iniciarlo!

Los dos hermanos estan ahora trabajando sin parar para satisfacer la alta demanda! TOTOCO Centro de Desarrollo esta trabajando con ellos en planificacion de ventas y contabilidad.

EL negocio a tenido un comienzo muy bueno y los clientes estan contentos de tener de nuevo el servicio de reparacion de bicicletas en el vecindario.

The micro loanstarted in March 2010.

The day after I gave them the loan I took the bus at 5 am to Moyogalpa and I meet Wilmara, Alvino and Herty there. They were going off island to get all the needed goods to initiate their business. I was so happy that they were so eager to initiate it!

The two brother are now working with non stop to satisfy the high demmand! TOTOCO Development Center is working with them in the sales planning and with accounting.

The business has a nice start and clients are happy to have again a nice bike repair service in the neighbourhood.

El siguiente microcredito se presenta para financiar la compra de repuesto de bicicleta. Alvino de 24 anos y su hermano Herti de 16, viven en Balgue en la casa familiar junto a su padres, hermanas y sobrinos. Albino es carpintero y Herti esta terminando sus estudios de secundaria. Alvino estuvo ejerciendo su profesion pero se encontro con el problema de la obtencion de madera en Ometepe, declarada reserva natural. Ambos aprendieron como reparar bicicletas. Empezaron reparando pinchazos y comprando algunas piezas de bicicleta, pero pronto crecio la demanda y no pueden atender a los clientes por falta de materiales. Necesitan financiacion para tener suficiente stock de repuestos y herramientas para las bicicletas con el fin de ofrecer un servicio consistente, rapido y de calidad a sus clientes..

Motivacion para el microcredito.
-Pareja de jovenes hermanos, motivados para continuar el negocio y ser independientes. Muestran iniciativa y ganas de aprender.

Desarrollo y seguimiento del micro credito “Produccion de carne de pollo y huevos”

Carne de pollo:
Al principio del mes pasado, EL Centro de Desarrollo de TOTOCO le hizo entrega del capital al empresario encargado de reiniciar la actividad de produccion de carne de pollo y huevos.
Los pollos se compran en tandas superpuestas para asegurar que la oferta de carne de pollo es constante. Entonces mientras unos estan siendo preparados para ser sacrificados despues de mes y medio, los otros estan creciendo. Una vez sacrificados los primeros, se compran otros.
Los pollos estan alcanzando el peso que les corresponde segun la edad y solamente murieron cinco de los cien comprados.

A los pollos se les incita a comer mas horas con luz artificial (a las seis de la tarde es completamente de noche), incrementando periodicamente el numero de horas. Viven en un area bastante decente con espacio suficiente para correr de un lugar a otro del corral.

Chicken are reaching the expected weight according to their age and only five out of a hundred died. Chicken are encouraged to eat extra hours with artificial light (at six p.m. is completely dark), periodically increasing the number of hours. They live in a decent area with enough space to run form one place to the other of the corral.

El objetivo principal de este microcredito es reiniciar la produccion de pollo y huevos y el servicio de venta que el receptor del prestamo ha estado practicando durante 5 anos asi como mejorar la calidad y la metodologia para llegar a ser mas organicos.

Beneficiarios:
-El receptor del prestamo y su familia. El es uno de los poco hombres de negocios locales, sabe como cuidar a los pollos y tiene la infraestructura necesaria para empezar de nuevo inmediatamente.

Supporting the local economy and diversifying available local products is an excellent way to develop more sustainable and strong communities. With relatively little, we can help islanders start their dream business and became more independent.

*Poultry and egg production.

The principal aim of this micro loan is to restart the poultry and egg production and sales service that the recipient of the loan has been practicing during 5 years as well as to improve the quality and methods in order to become organic.

La juventud de Balgue esta necesitada de estimulos creativos y de actividades varias. Los deportes son la mejor manera de mantenerse saludables y activos y son una buena manera para mantener a la juventud alejada de la calle (un problema creciente dentro de la comunidad es el abuso de drogas y alcohol). El formar parte de un equipo deportivo genera sentimiento de responsabilidad y de espiritu comunitario.

*Esponsorizacion y apoyo al equipo local de futbol
Presupuesto para el año 2010: $900

El futbol esta siendo cada vez mas popular en la isla. En comparacion con el beisbol que es el deporte nacional, el futbol es mas accesible, en cuanto a los recursos necesarios para practicarlo y el bolsillo.

El objetivo principal de este proyecto es proveer al ya existente equipo de futbol de lo siguiente:
-Recursos financieros para el equipamiento basico de futbol como pelotas, guantes para el portero, hinchadores, pito de arbitro, camisetas, etc.
-Organizacion del equipo de futbol
-Entrenador – tactica y tecnica

The youth of Balgüe are in need of activities and creative outlets. Sports are the best way to be healthy and active and it is a good way to keep young people off the streets (a developing problem within the community is alcohol and drug abuse). Being a part of a team breeds responsibility and a sense of community spirit.

Football is becoming increasingly popular on the Island. Compared to the national sport of baseball, football is more accessible, practically and economically.

The principal aim of this project is to provide the already selected football team with the following:
-Financial resources for the basic football equipment such as footballs, keeper gloves, pumps, -Referee whistle , T-shirts, etc.
-Organization of the football team
-Training support – tactical and technical

La educacion es un objetivo primordial del Centro de Desarrollo TOTOCO. En general la calidad de la ensenanza en la isla es baja en todos los aspectos; calidad de profesorado, niveles de dificultad, estilo de la educacion ( demasiado centrada en la memorizacion y no en la resolucion de problemas) y los ninos estan claramente por debajo de los niveles requeridos en otros paises mas desarrollados en materias como matematicas, lectura y escritura. Los colegios estan constantemente faltos de financiacion para cubrir cuestiones basicas como en compra de materiales, infraestructura basica ademas de antihigienicas condiciones sanitarias.

El principal objetivo de este proyecto educacional es el ofrecer clases de apoyo (particulares) a los estudiantes de primaria y secundaria mediante el empleo de profesores locales y profesionales que se encuentren en situacion de desempleo. Las clases se impartiran principalmente en la biblioteca de Balgue (La Casa Amarilla) y en el instituto.
El segundo objetivo es ofrecer suficientes y consistentes horas de apertura de la biblioteca de la comunidad. La creciente biblioteca ofrece a la comunidad un unico y diverso centro de aprendizaje con acceso a una coleccion de libros y otros recursos no disponibles es la mayoria de los pueblos de Nicaragua.

Los beneficiarios de este programa son:
-Estudiantes de primaria y secundaria con necesidad de clases de repaso.
-Profesores y profesionales desempleados
-La comunidad local (a traves del mayor acceso a la libreria comunitaria La Casa Amarilla)

EDUCATION

Education is a core objective for the TOTOCO Development Center. The general quality of education on the island is low in all areas; quality of teachers, difficulty level, education style (overly focused on memorization and not creative problem solving) and the children are clearly behind western children in basic topics such as mathematics, reading and writing. Schools are chronically underfunded in terms of materials, basic infrastructure while sanitary conditions are unhygienic.

Budget for 2010: $3446

The principle aim of this educational project is to offer remedial (extra) classes to primary and secondary school students by employing unemployed local teachers and professionals. Classes will be tought mainly in the Casa Amarilla Community Center in town an in the Secondary school.
The second objective is to offer sufficient regular and consistent opening hours for the library in town. The expanding library offers the community a unique and diverse learning center with access to a collection of books and other resources unavailable in most other parts of Nicaragua.

The beneficiaries of this program are:
-Primary and secondary school students in need of extra tutoring.
-Unemployed teachers and or professionals.
-The local community (through improved access to the Casa Amarilla Community Library).

La filosofia de TOTOCO sobre ecoturismo se centra en la trinidad entre negocio, personas y medio ambiente. La clave fundamental de esta filosofia es que la necesidad de realizar un proyecto comunitario debe de ser identificada por los propios miembros de la comunidad. La continuidad y la efectividad de los proyectos depende de que estos sean dirigidos y defendidos por individuos locales.

La funcion del Centro de Desarrollo de TOTOCO es facilitar, a los proyectos dirigidos por individuos locales, la financiacion, materiales y recursos humanos necesarios para llevarlos a cabo. Patricia Pillet es la coordinadora responsible a tiempo completo de esta area del proyecto TOTOCO.

TOTOCO's philosophy on eco-tourism is based around the trinity of business, people and the environment. Essential to this philosophy is our belief that any community project be based on a need identified by members of the community. The long term continuity and effectiveness is dependent on projects being championed and led by local individuals.

We also picked up in Rivas the quarterly magazine "La Boletina" and we will deliver the 50 magazines in Maderas's Volcano - (Mano Amiga library, health center, secondary school and to our teenagers interested in our workshops about sexual and reproductive health).

Teenagers workshops are re-started with a big attendance! This time we talked about sexual transmission diseases.

We started with the "professional workshops" with Tessa Heine, bachelor of occupational therapy in La Trobe University, Australia Australia). Tessa consultations are on Wednesdays since last 16th of June.
